Saving money on gas with rising prices

Considering the summer is already here, (not technically but I’m tanning outside writing this on my phone as it’s 24 C / 75 F, and today is the spring equinox) so that means it’s road trip season, and Lexi and I are gearing up. I already got her the new rims so might as well start thinking about some trips.

A damper on the summer prospects is always the rising cost of gas prices. Today, in Kitchener, gas hit $1.30 / L, or $4.94 / gal, and this mainstay of road trip expenses just ate a larger portion of the pie. Considering the costs of food and other supplies, this is putting a strain on budgets. Upcoming elections on both sides of the border are sure to make this a major focus.

That’s not what this post is about. It’s about saving you money so you still get the chance to take that road trip and keep some money in your pocket, or spend it on another expense (ie: gift souvenirs and campfire activities). The upcoming article can be summarized in two words:

Be Patient

You might say, “simple enough, but I have places to be, and if you mean slow down and leave space then you’ve already lost me. I didn’t get this HEMI engine to save gas now did I?” No you didn’t, but what if getting there 10% faster increased your costs by 30%? Yup, your mom/wife/person who nags you about you driving too fast is right.

Here’s the math:

Some real numbers taken from numerous road trips in my car, 2.5L Altima:

At 131 km/h (82 miles/h) engine does 3.1k rpm, burning 10.4L/100 km (22.6 miles/gal)
At 122 km/h (76 miles/h) engine does 2.8k rpm, burning 8.4 L/100 km (28.0 miles/gal)
At 107 km/h (67 miles/h) engine does 2.5k rpm, burning 7.1 L/100 km (33.1 miles/gal)

Now let’s see what this means in drive time and expenses:

400 km trip (example: Toronto to Windsor one way)

A) Going 107: duration of trip 3:44, gas used 28.4L, fuel expense $36.92
B) Going 122: duration of trip 3:17, gas used 33.6L, fuel expense $43.68
C) Going 131: duration of trip 3:03, gas used 41.6L, fuel expense $54.08

With an 18% decrease in time spent driving and a 46% increase in the amount of gas used between A and C, it’s a question of diminishing returns. Intuitively, you can figure out that an engine larger than 2.5L would only increase the disparities, while at the same time bumping up the lower bracket. Just some food for thought.

I happen to thoroughly enjoy driving, so I just go with the trucks (usually between 105 – 115), let people pass me, and just enjoy the music. It’s also a whole lot less stressful, I see people just driving pissed off all the time and I can’t help but think they’re doing it to themselves.

The Power is Yours!

Numbers that make me pause

So today in Kitchener it is 24 degrees out, gas is practically 1.30 and we’re still seeing what I would call absurdly low interest rates on credit.* Just some numbers I’ve been noticing. Not time to panic, just signs of the times I guess.

* in of themselves low interest rates aren’t inherently evil, it’s the predatory lending practices that invariably accompany them.

My Halloween Gym Costume – Update

Hey all,

So in my last entry I said my 2012 Halloween costume was going to be the Old Spice guy. Turns out, according to that most reliable of sources known as the Internet, it was the most popular costume back in 2010. So, since I’m a paragon of all things trendy, I’m going to update my costume and be Captain Planet. He’s our hero. He’s going to take pollution down to zero. I haven’t seen a good Captain Planet costume in a long time, and I think I’ll be able to pull it off.

In order to not look like this next Halloween, my first two New Year’s resolution will be to go to the gym more often.  I’ll be keeping my gym stats and I’ll post a monthly update with progress.  Hopefully by the end I can look like this… except not a cartoon, and I can’t fly, nor will my teeth sparkle so.

To go along with the costume, I have to get the clothes too. I’ll keep an eye out for those but the search won’t begin until the summer. That’ll involve red boots and jammers, WWE belt (hopefully massively oversized), green hair, and blue skin. Still figuring out what to do about the shoulder and chest part, but I think that’ll be paint too.

A light-hearted update from an otherwise heavy month, thanks for reading, and remember: “The power is yours!”

Where do we go from here?

Hi everyone!

I must apologize for my lack of updates as of late. I’ve been having a tough time sitting down to write one of these, as there’s so much on my mind all the time that it’s hard to pen any of it.

Today, however, I am home sick with the flu, Mozart is playing on Grooveshark, I’m drinking hot tea with honey and I just downed two (!!!) tablespoons of Buckley’s. The advertising campaign for that stuff was spot on. I say was because I haven’t seen them in years, but if you need a refresher here‘s a spot from a couple years back. If you search around YouTube for Buckley’s, or if you’ve ever had it yourself, you’ll understand why I put exclamation marks for two tablespoons.

On to the update!

Work Life

I’ve been working at MNP LLP (earlier I made reference to Meyers Norris Penny, they actually changed their name to MNP as of July this year) and I must say the culture and atmosphere of the workplace really suit me. The people, the pay, and the general attitude at work are all great.

I’m getting along with people at work, and I even organized the pre-UFE results party and the turnout was better than anticipated. It was a great night, and thanks to everyone who came and celebrated with the writers. Celebrating after UFE results are announced is like salt in the wound for those who failed, so I took it upon myself to show our writers a good time while they were still united in their anticipation. Unfortunately, one of our writers did not pass, but Adom Postma, who sits on the other side of my space, did. Congratulations Adom!

I’m still battling with the fact that I have much to learn and I make mistakes once in a while. To anyone who knows me, yes, I did just say I make mistakes. I must concede, however, that I do get frustrated because it feels like none of my decisions are my own. It feels formulaic at the best of times, but the work is the work. I don’t feel like I’m contributing or adding value, and it directly impacts my job satisfaction. This is a stepping stone position though, and like my managers say: “you have to grind it out”.

That being said, MNP is a great company to work for, and I do appreciate the opportunities I can pursue if I choose to develop myself as a professional. I plan on going more on the management consulting side of things if and when I can, and assurance is a good way to get to know what the heck I’m talking about, at least on the finance end of it. In University I took part in all those case competitions because I loved doing it and I was good at it. If I can somehow leverage that into something I do for money, Booyah achieved.

Buckley’s update: my burps taste like Buckley’s, how’s that for punishment.

Personal Life

So it’s been almost three months living with my brother, and while it has had it’s ups and downs as expected, it’s been a great situation overall. We have our routine in place, and it’s largely remained intact from when we were living on our own, which is nice because Mimi and I both need our “relax from the day” time, which isn’t exactly conducive to social interaction.

Me and Lexi have been spending a lot more time together. I have a 15 minute drive to work, and I just listen to CBC radio one. Great find by the way, if you get a chance to listen to CBC radio, check it out. They’ll present a news story, then bring in experts who disagree with each other to talk about it, and it’ll be civil. Imagine that, civil discourse between opposing groups of thought without the mud flinging and feces spewing forth from open orifices at all times that we’ve come to expect (ie: democracy). After the panel discusses the issues everyone will thank each other for coming on to talk about it, then CBC radio will put on a piece of music that matches or is a good follow up to the story they were discussing. Lexi appreciates the fact that it’s not constant gangsta rap or Tool coming out of her speakers.

Dariusz and I signed up for LA Fitness together, and I must say I missed going to the gym on a regular basis. It helps with my mood swings and I get personal satisfaction out of just going. I’m working on keeping my heart rate at 170 for half an hour, then doing a circuit of all the muscle groups. I’m not looking to get ‘uge (for some reason the “h” gets more and more silent the bigger someone gets), just be healthy. Mimi posited the following challenge to me for next years Halloween costume: Old Spice Guy. A lofty goal indeed, and I think I’ll use this blog to keep a timeline of my progress, so stay tuned!

As for video games I’ve been playing, right now I’m pretty hooked on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. It truly is a masterpiece and a work of art. I have my Xbox connected to my 48″ HDTV, and sometimes I have to stop whatever I’m doing and just marvel at the scenery, the game is that gorgeous. Games these days have been getting so intricate and story driven, it’s like being part of a great series of movies/books/epic saga of you.

Shout out goes to my peeps in Ottawa: Simon, Mike, Steve, Jen, Brian, and Patricia, among others. We visited twice since we’ve been in Kitchener, and it’s always a pleasure to hang out.

We’ll be visiting Windsor this weekend to go see the Detroit Lions take on the Minnesota Vikings, courtesy of my brother who bought the family tickets as a Christmas present. Our parents are going away for the holidays as they got a free vacation voucher (since they got robbed last time they went…), so we’ll be doing an early Christmas on my side of the fam. When I last visited Windsor I purchased a perfectly functional silver beer helmet at a Halloween costume store, and I’ll be sporting that at the game. We’ll definitely try to take any opportunities to see people during the weekend.

With that in mind, here’s a parting thought from the late great Jack Layton, these words have touched me and will ring true forever:

My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.

Much love,

Krzysztof

So it begins

Hey fans,

So it has been a busy couple weeks. After only a month of job searching, I have accepted a job offer from Meyers Norris Penny LLP in Kitchener. It’s a public accounting firm with a large national presence, and plenty of opportunities for development if I choose to pursue them. I’m excited for this new chapter; a fresh start and lots of possibilities are ahead of me.

I’d like to thank everyone that has supported me throughout this process. It has really been a great summer, and I feel really lucky to have so much love from friends and family alike.

As we needed a place to live, Dariusz offered his home to us. We’ve slowly been moving our stuff in over the past couple of days. We’re kind of imposing our will, and our stuff, upon him but this will be a great opportunity to ‘party down’ as the kids say these days.

Party on Wayne.

Thoughts in the sun

Hey folks,

It seems like this unemployed lifestyle of mine is coming to an end. I admit I thoroughly enjoyed these past 3 months. I’m great with my own money, so that wasn’t on my mind at all. You can just Live. I treated it like retirement and sometimes referred to it as such.

However, I realize that this is earned. It’ll be worth working towards.

Love.

My Job Hunt, August 2011

Hey everyone!

So I’m back from Poland for about a month now, and I’ve been keeping busy (hmm, not busy… occupied) with my search for work as it began in earnest on August 1st. A lot has happened since then, and a lot of trips with Myriam, Princess, and Lexi (my car’s name is Lexi). We’ve continued the trend my dad and I set in Europe, with much of our time spent travelling from place to place, visiting family for 2-3 days at a time, and enjoying the quieter moments as they become available. The timing of my vacation coincidentally coincided perfectly with my interviews and 2nd interviews and coffee breaks with collaborators.

Most of the interviewers have asked me, “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” The honest answer is: “I don’t know”. You see, I have been doing a very limited spectrum of the positions and type of work available to CAs. I’m not convinced that it is, or isn’t, the career path for me. I know that in the 10+ years future I want to be in an advisory role, someone a business can trust with their needs, and who I can create value for. Whether that’s as a member of the executive of a company, or a manager at a CA firm on the consulting side. I haven’t had the experience necessary to make that decision yet. Maybe the better answer is then: “On my way.”

In other news: Myriam’s grandma had her 90th birthday party, Princess (7 lbs cat) scratched Amber (70 lbs dog) in the face, we celebrated our “2nd” in Brockville at a nice cabin, I ran a beer mile (23 minutes with the extra lap/beer), and ground veal makes amazing hamburgers on my BBQ.

You must have, at some point, pondered, “Why Lexi?” Well, she was purchased with the sole intent of facilitating road trips. Big trunk, good fuel economy, room to fit 4. Our first road trip was to Lexington, Kentucky. The name had to be one syllable, so quite obviously it couldn’t be “Kent”. Now you know why.
